Master’s Program in Indonesian Language: Strengthening Language, Literature, and Education in the Global Era

MAKASSAR — The Master’s Program in Indonesian Language (PSMBI), Faculty of Humanities, Universitas Hasanuddin (Unhas), provides an academic environment dedicated to advancing the study of language, literature, and Indonesian language education in response to the challenges and opportunities of a rapidly changing world.

Established in 1989 and welcoming its first students in 1990, PSMBI received its operational license through the Decree of the Director General of Higher Education, Ministry of Education and Culture, Number 591/DIKTI/KEP/1993, issued on October 21, 1993.

In its early years, PSMBI was part of the Graduate School of Universitas Hasanuddin. As Unhas continued to develop institutionally, the program has grown into an established graduate program for those seeking to deepen their academic and professional expertise in Indonesian language and related fields.

The establishment of PSMBI is closely connected to the strategic position of Indonesian as a national language and an essential part of Indonesia’s cultural identity. Affirmed as the language of unity through the Youth Pledge of October 28, 1928, and recognized as the official state language under Article 36 of the 1945 Constitution, Indonesian plays a central role in the nation’s social, cultural, educational, and intellectual life.

Amid globalization and the growing influence of international languages, the development of Indonesian requires rigorous, systematic, and sustainable academic inquiry. PSMBI contributes to this effort by strengthening the study of language, literature, education, and research relevant to the needs of society.

Three Areas of Specialization

One of the key strengths of PSMBI is its three areas of specialization, allowing students to pursue advanced study according to their academic interests and professional goals.

The three areas are Linguistics, Literary Studies, and Indonesian Language Education and Teaching.

These areas are designed to respond to the increasingly diverse needs of society and the professional world. Students are not only encouraged to master theoretical perspectives but are also trained to apply their knowledge and academic skills in real-world contexts.

In the field of linguistics, for example, students explore subjects such as Indonesian Phonology, Indonesian Morphosyntax, Indonesian Semantics and Lexicography, Sociolinguistics, Critical Discourse Analysis, Functional Semiotics, and Indonesian Language Error Analysis.

These areas of study provide students with a comprehensive understanding of Indonesian, including its structure, use, social functions, and development within contemporary society.

An Adaptive Curriculum for Contemporary Needs

PSMBI continuously develops its curriculum in response to advances in science and technology as well as the evolving needs of society and employers.

The curriculum is grounded in the Indonesian National Qualifications Framework (KKNI), providing students with both strong academic foundations and practical competencies.

As the professional world becomes increasingly digital and dynamic, graduates need to be adaptable and capable of responding to new challenges. For this reason, learning at PSMBI goes beyond theoretical mastery and emphasizes the practical application of knowledge to address real-world issues.

Students may also gain practical experience through internships at institutions and professional settings relevant to their areas of specialization and graduate profiles.

This approach is intended to produce graduates who are not only academically accomplished but also professionally prepared to contribute meaningfully to society.

Meeting National and International Needs

PSMBI graduates are prepared to contribute across a wide range of fields, including linguistics, literary studies, education, teaching, research, and academic development.

Graduates are expected to possess the ability to address language, literature, education, and teaching-related issues professionally at national, regional, and international levels.

Communication and collaboration skills are also essential components of the program. Graduates are encouraged to develop the capacity to build professional networks and collaborate with institutions and organizations both in Indonesia and abroad.

PSMBI therefore serves not only as a pathway to a master’s degree but also as a platform for developing academic expertise, professional competencies, and collaborative networks.

Expanding Academic Networks and Collaboration

Looking toward the future, PSMBI is committed to strengthening collaboration with universities, institutions, and other relevant stakeholders.

Collaboration is an important strategy for expanding academic networks while increasing the visibility and reach of the program among prospective students and the wider community.

Through stronger partnerships and broader outreach, PSMBI aims to provide greater opportunities for students from diverse backgrounds to pursue graduate education and deepen their expertise in Indonesian language and related disciplines.

Strengthening these networks is also part of the program’s commitment to bringing the academic study of Indonesian at FIB Unhas into broader national and international academic communities.

Commitment to Academic Quality

Quality assurance remains a fundamental part of PSMBI’s development. The program undergoes regular evaluation and external quality assurance through established accreditation mechanisms.

The process involves various stakeholders, including academic forums, professional associations, study program associations, national accreditation bodies such as BAN-PT or LAM-PT, as well as international accreditation, certification, and validation institutions.

The involvement of these stakeholders helps ensure that academic standards remain relevant, rigorous, and responsive to developments in scholarship and the changing needs of society.

A Place to Grow, Create, and Contribute

More than three decades of development reflect PSMBI’s continuing commitment to advancing Indonesian language and related fields through higher education.

In an era shaped by technological transformation, globalization, and rapidly changing professional landscapes, the Master’s Program in Indonesian Language at the Faculty of Humanities, Universitas Hasanuddin, continues to provide an academic space for the next generation of scholars, educators, researchers, and professionals to deepen their knowledge of language, literature, and Indonesian language education.

With three areas of specialization, an adaptive curriculum, expanding academic networks, practical learning opportunities, and a strong commitment to quality, PSMBI offers an academic pathway for those who seek to strengthen their expertise while contributing to the future of the Indonesian language.
