Reflection on Unhas’ 70th Anniversary: Reaffirming Commitment to Societal Impact and Target to Enter the World's Top 500
MAKASSAR — Universitas Hasanuddin (Unhas) held an Open Senate Meeting Ceremony for its 70th Anniversary with the theme "7 Decades of Unhas: Impactful and Global" at the A.P. Pettarani Hall, Unhas Tamalanrea Campus, Makassar, on Thursday (10/09/2026).
On that occasion, Unhas Rector Prof. Dr. Ir. Jamaluddin Jompa, M.Sc. highlighted various achievements while setting out targets for the university's future development. One strategic milestone presented was Unhas' success in breaking into the Top 1000 of the QS World University Rankings two years earlier than the initial target.
During this milestone event, Unhas also reinforced its ambition to climb into the top 500 universities globally. This effort is supported by Unhas' steadily rising position in the QS Asia Rankings, reaching 201st place in 2026.
Despite driving academic performance on the international stage, Unhas Rector Prof. Dr. Ir. Jamaluddin Jompa, M.Sc stressed that the university's future path must not focus solely on internal interests. Unhas must deliver broader societal benefits through innovation, community service, and tangible contributions to the nation.
In appreciation of these achievements, the Rector expressed sincere gratitude to the entire academic community, collaborators, and strategic partners who have jointly built and elevated Universitas Hasanuddin's reputation.
The speech concluded with a profound message from the Rector: "The beauty of a garden, the magnificence of a building, the prosperity of a nation, and the excellence of an institution never arise from a vacuum. When we marvel at them, we are witnessing the clear reality of hard work—the result of brilliant design, precise strategy, solid cooperation, visionary leadership, and an unquenchable passion."
The main ceremony, attended by the academic community and university leadership, proceeded solemnly, reaffirming seven decades of Unhas' service to the nation and its presence on the global stage.
