Synergy between the Department of English Literature, Faculty of Cultural Sciences, Hasanuddin University, and SD Islam Al Akhyar: Realizing English Language Learning Based on Literature, Creativity, and Digital Technology

Makassar, October 31, 2025 — The Department of English Literature, Faculty of Cultural Sciences, Hasanuddin University conducted a Community Service Program (P2M) at SD Islam Al Akhyar Makassar on Friday, October 31, 2025. This activity serves as a form of implementation of the collaboration established between the Department of English Literature, Faculty of Cultural Sciences (FIB) of Hasanuddin University and the Islamic Education Foundation (YPI) Al Akhyar Makassar.

Carrying the theme “Strengthening English Literacy and Competence through Literature, Creativity, and Digital Technology Approaches at SD Islam Al Akhyar Makassar,” this program aims to enhance English literacy and competence at the elementary school level through creative, contextual, and technology-based approaches.

 

The program took place at SD Islam Al Akhyar, located at Jl. Arung Teko No. 99, Sudiang, Biringkanaya, Makassar, involving the school principal, teachers, and students of SD Islam Al Akhyar. All activities were designed to be interactive and practical, consisting of several segments as follows:

  1. For School Principals, Vice Principals, and Teachers:
    A presentation session was conducted under the topic “Strengthening English Literacy and Competence through Literature, Creativity, and Digital Technology Approaches.”
    • Moderator: Dr. Sitti Sahraeny, S.S., M.AppLing.
    • Speakers: Prof. Drs. Burhanuddin, M.Hum., Ph.D.; Prof. Dra. Nasmilah, M.Hum., Ph.D.; and Muhammad Ridha Anugrah, S.S., M.Hum.

During this session, the speakers emphasized the importance of integrating literary works, elements of creativity, and the use of digital technology in English teaching to improve students’ motivation and learning outcomes in the modern era.

  • For Elementary Students:
    Various interactive activities were organized by lecturers and students of the Department of English Literature, FIB Unhas, to foster interest and enhance English language skills among students of SD Islam Al Akhyar Makassar. The activities included:
    • Interactive Storytelling Workshop: Teaching moral values through literature and storytelling.
    • Educational Games: Improving English vocabulary through interactive games.
    • Short Video Learning: Enhancing English vocabulary through engaging and visual learning materials.
    • Creative Writing Activity: Encouraging students’ imagination and writing skills through story writing based on children’s books.

The program received enthusiastic responses from all participants. The school principals and teachers under the Al Akhyar Islamic Education Foundation gained new insights into creative and innovative teaching strategies, while the students enjoyed learning English in a more engaging and enjoyable way. It is hoped that this activity will inspire the development of renewed Lesson Plans (RPPs), teaching media, and English learning modules that are innovative and based on literature, creativity, and digital technology at SD Islam Al Akhyar.

The reflection from this program highlighted that literacy and digitalization are the foundations of lifelong learning essential for 21st-century teachers. Furthermore, literature, creativity, and technology are the three wings of educational innovation that complement each other in developing students’ language competence and character.

As the closing statement of the event, the Department of English Literature, Faculty of Cultural Sciences, Hasanuddin University, and SD Islam Al Akhyar Makassar expressed their commitment to continuing collaboration in developing literacy and innovative English language learning.

“Let us work together to build a generation of excellence and integrity, rooted in Literature, Creativity, and Digital Technology, with international competitiveness through English.”
