Cha No Yu: Experiencing the Spirit of Japanese Tea Ceremony

On Tuesday, September 16, 2025, the Department of Japanese Literature, Faculty of Cultural Sciences, Hasanuddin University, held a Chanoyu Workshop with the theme “Experiencing the Spirit of Japanese Tea Ceremony.” The event featured Prof. Ishizuka Osamu from the University of Tsukuba, Japan, as the main speaker, and was officially opened by Mr. Ohashi Koichi, Head of the Consular Office of Japan in Makassar.
The workshop took place at the Mattulada Hall and was met with great enthusiasm from students and invited guests. More than 20 participants dressed in yukata had the opportunity to directly experience the Cha no Yu ritual, taste authentic matcha, and enjoy traditional Japanese sweets brought specially by Prof. Ishizuka.
Also in attendance were the Dean of the Faculty of Cultural Sciences, Prof. Andi Muhammad Akhmar, along with several lecturers and administrative staff, who participated in the tea ceremony alongside the students. The event was further enlivened by traditional dance performances from both South Sulawesi and Japan, creating a vibrant cross-cultural atmosphere.
Through this workshop, participants not only learned about the etiquette and philosophy of the Japanese tea ceremony but also gained a meaningful first-hand experience of Japanese cultural traditions.
