History

The Doctoral Program in Biology is the fourth doctoral program administered by the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences at Hasanuddin University. The existing doctoral programs are in Chemistry, Mathematics, and Physics, and all three have already produced graduates.

The Department of Biology at the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, Hasanuddin University, initially had only one program: the Bachelor’s Program in Biology (PSB S1), established in 1963. For more than half a century, it has carried out the three pillars of higher education—education, research, and community service—in the field of biology. At the time of its establishment, the Department of Biology was part of the Faculty of Exact and Natural Sciences (FIPPA); subsequently, in 1977, it became part of the Faculty of Science and Technology in accordance with Presidential Decree No. 68/1982. Over time, the Biology Undergraduate Program (PSB S1) has undergone development in facilities and infrastructure as well as improvements in the quality of human resources, particularly the faculty. Currently, there are 30 faculty members, 66.7% of whom hold doctoral degrees (20 individuals, 11 of whom hold the rank of professor).

Subsequently, in 2017, the Department of Biology expanded its academic programs to a higher level by launching the Master’s Program in Biology, which received approval for establishment and also obtained minimum accreditation from the National Accreditation Board for Higher Education (BAN-PT) in 2017 under Decision No. 2331/SK/BAN-PT/Akred-Min/M/VII/2017, dated July 18, 2017. Reaccreditation was conducted in 2018, and the program received a “B” rating from the National Accreditation Board for Higher Education (BAN-PT) based on BAN-PT Decision No. 2563/SK/BAN-PT/Akred/M/VII/2019 in 2019, valid from July 23, 2019, through July 23, 2024. Subsequently, the department underwent reaccreditation and, for the first time, received an “EXCELLENT” accreditation status from LAMSAMA based on LAMSAMA Decision No. 081/SK/LAMSAMA/Akred/M/VIII/2024. The Department of Biology has 30 faculty members, 70% of whom hold doctoral degrees and 30% master’s degrees, who are developing advanced education through the Doctoral Program in Biology.
