History of the Establishment of the Master of Biology Study Program

The Biology Study Program (PSB S1) was established in 1963 and has been implementing the Tri Dharma of Higher Education (Tri Dharma Perguruan Tinggi) in the field of biology for more than half a century. Initially, PSB S1 was part of the Faculty of Exact Sciences and Natural Sciences (FIPPA). In 1977, it became part of the Faculty of Science and Technology in accordance with Presidential Decree No. 68/1982. Over time, the Biology Study Program (PSB S1) has undergone infrastructure development and improved human resource quality, particularly in its teaching staff. Currently, the number of teaching staff is 31, with 74.19 (23) holding doctoral degrees. Ten teaching staff hold functional positions, including professors, associate professors, and assistant professors.

With the availability of facilities and infrastructure, and the potential of over 70% of teaching staff holding doctoral degrees, the Department of Biology has developed a Master's Program in Biology. Planning for the opening of this master's program began in 2010, by forming a task force for the opening of the Master of Biology Program (S2). The opening of the Master of Biology Program was expected to contribute to improving the quality of human resources in Sulawesi, especially South Sulawesi. At that time, there was no non-teaching Master of Biology Program in Sulawesi. Therefore, the opening of a pure Master of Biology program was urgently needed. After going through various processes, the Master of Biology Program obtained an opening permit and also received minimum accreditation from BAN PT in 2017 with number 2331/SK/BAN-PT/Akred-Min/M/VII/2017, dated July 18, 2017. Subsequently, re-accreditation was carried out in 2018 and received category B from the National Accreditation Board for Higher Education based on BAN-PT Decree No. 2563/SK/BAN-PT/Akred/M/VII/2019 in 2019 which is valid from July 23, 2019 to July 23, 2024. Re-accreditation was carried out again in 2024 and received the Excellent category from the Lamsama Accreditation body according to accreditation decision No. 081/SK/LAMSAMA/Akred/M/VIII/2024 valid from August 5, 2024 to August 4, 2029.
