In Eastern Indonesia, access to advanced studies in history was once a significant challenge. Many undergraduate history graduates had to look beyond the region to pursue master’s degrees, while the demand for qualified historians continued to grow across universities, government institutions, and the private sector.
In response to this need, Hasanuddin University took a strategic step to expand opportunities in historical studies. In 2005, the foundation was laid through a history concentration within the Master’s Program in Anthropology at the Faculty of Social and Political Sciences. This early initiative marked an important beginning in developing graduate-level historical studies in the region.
Over time, the program experienced a period of inactivity starting in 2010. However, the commitment to providing broader and more accessible historical education remained strong. Recognizing the renewed academic and professional demand, the Master’s Program in History was officially reestablished in 2019 as a full study program under the Faculty of Cultural Sciences, Hasanuddin University.
Today, the program serves not only as a place of learning, but also as a platform for critical inquiry, research, and meaningful engagement with society. Rooted in local contexts and enriched by global perspectives, the Master’s Program in History is dedicated to nurturing graduates who can understand the past, interpret the present, and contribute thoughtfully to the future.
