The Inauguration of Full Professor Prof. Dr. Andi Masniawati, M.Si. Strengthens the Development of Plant Biotechnology
Hasanuddin University has once again achieved a proud academic milestone by appointing Prof. Dr. Andi Masniawati, M.Si., as a Full Professor in the field of Plant Biotechnology on May 11, 2026. The inauguration, which took place in a solemn atmosphere, was attended by the academic community of Hasanuddin University, family, colleagues, and invited guests from various educational and research institutions. This achievement is a form of recognition for Prof. Andi Masniawati’s dedication, contributions, and work in the advancement of science, particularly in the field of plant biotechnology.
In her scientific lecture titled “Biotechnology of Local Rice from South Sulawesi in Achieving National Food Security: From Germplasm to Biofactory,” Prof. Dr. Andi Masniawati, M.Si., highlighted the importance of utilizing and developing the genetic resources of local rice from South Sulawesi as a foundation for supporting national food security.

She explained that local rice germplasm possesses highly valuable genetic diversity, particularly as a source of genes for resistance to environmental stress, pests, and diseases, as well as a foundation for modern plant breeding programs. Through a biotechnology approach—ranging from genetic characterization and tissue culture to the engineering and production of high-value biomolecules—local rice serves not only as a food source but also holds the potential to be developed into a biofactory capable of producing various beneficial products for the agricultural, health, and industrial sectors. These innovations are expected to strengthen food self-reliance while enhancing the value of Indonesia’s local biological resources.
On this occasion, Prof. Dr. Andi Masniawati, M.Si., also emphasized the importance of synergy among various scientific disciplines in the development of agricultural biotechnology, ranging from genetics, molecular biology, plant breeding, to food technology and bio-based industries. According to her, strong collaboration between universities, research institutions, the government, and the industrial sector is key to optimizing the utilization of local rice germplasm as a source of innovation capable of addressing future food security challenges.

She also highlighted the role of Hasanuddin University as a center for scientific development with access to the rich biodiversity of Sulawesi and Eastern Indonesia. Through ongoing biotechnology research, the wealth of local genetic resources can be developed into high-quality products with significant economic value, while also supporting national food self-sufficiency. According to him, this professorial appointment is not merely a personal academic achievement but also a manifestation of a shared commitment to strengthening plant biotechnology research and innovation to support sustainable agricultural development.
The appointment of Prof. Dr. Andi Masniawati, M.Si., as a Full Professor marks a significant milestone for Hasanuddin University and the Indonesian scientific community in reinforcing the role of plant biotechnology as a pillar of national development. Her contributions in education, research, and the development of plant genetic resources are expected to continue driving innovations that benefit the broader community.
Congratulations to Prof. Dr. Andi Masniawati, M.Si., on her appointment as a Full Professor. May this achievement further inspire and motivate her to continue creating, innovating, and making tangible contributions to the advancement of science, particularly in the fields of plant biotechnology and national food security.
