History

The Master in Data Science is the seventh postgraduate program established under the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences (FMIPA) at Hasanuddin University. Managed by the Department of Statistics, this program leverages interdisciplinary expertise from the Departments of Statistics, Mathematics, and Geophysics. It is strategically designed to provide an advanced academic pathway for graduates from Statistics, Mathematics, Information Systems, and Informatics Engineering, supported by modern laboratory facilities and a robust academic infrastructure.

The development of this program has been meticulously prepared by a dedicated Task Force, focusing on a curriculum that meets contemporary industry standards. This process involved extensive workshops and consultations with key stakeholders and prospective employers, including the Communication and Information Services (Dinas Kominfo) at provincial and regional levels, the BPS-Statistics Indonesia, the Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD), and various industry partners. These collaborations ensure that the curriculum is aligned with the evolving demands of the data-driven professional landscape.

Following the formal recommendation by the FMIPA Academic Senate on January 3, 2025, the program is scheduled to commence operations in the First Semester of the 2025/2026 Academic Year. This initiative is a core component of the strategic partnership between the Rector of Hasanuddin University and the Governor of South Sulawesi aimed at accelerating human resource development in Data Science. Under this Partnership Agreement (PKS), the Provincial Government of South Sulawesi will also provide dedicated scholarships for recommended candidates pursuing this degree.
