Concentrations

🗣 Linguistics 🗣

The Linguistics concentration equips students with the skills to analyze the structure and system of the French language from a scientific perspective. Students explore various dimensions of language, including phonology, morphology, syntax, pragmatics, and discourse analysis. The approach is both descriptive and analytical, enabling students not only to understand how the French language functions, but also to examine linguistic phenomena within broader social and communicative contexts. This concentration is particularly relevant for students interested in translation, language teaching, linguistic research, and professions that require a deep and systematic command of language.

📖 Literature 📖

The Literature concentration invites students to engage deeply with French-language literary works across various periods and movements, from classical literature to contemporary Francophone writing. Students develop the ability to read critically, interpret literary texts, and understand the relationship between literary works and the historical, social, and cultural contexts from which they emerge. A range of literary theories and critical approaches are applied as analytical tools to uncover the layers of meaning embedded in texts. This concentration cultivates students who are not only sensitive to the aesthetics of language, but also capable of thinking critically and reflectively about the human condition and society as reflected in literature.

🌏 Cultural Studies 🌏

The Cultural Studies concentration provides students with a comprehensive understanding of society, identity, and cultural dynamics in the French-speaking world and the broader Francophone region. Students examine diverse cultural expressions; including film, media, the arts, and social practices through a critical cultural studies lens. They are trained to understand how values, ideologies, and identities are constructed and negotiated across cultural contexts, including in the relationship between French and Indonesian cultures. This concentration prepares students for careers that require cross-cultural sensitivity, such as diplomacy, tourism, journalism, and work within cultural and international organizations.
