HISTORY OF THE STATISTICS STUDY PROGRAM

The Statistics study program is one of the three study programs managed by the Department of Mathematics, Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences (FMIPA), Hasanuddin University (UNHAS). The Department of Mathematics FMIPA UNHAS was established in 1963, along with the opening of the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences at Hasanuddin University. Initially, the Department of Mathematics was only staffed by three lecturers (Dra. Nurul Muchlisa, Drs. Sukirman, and Drs. A. Suhardjono) who provided mathematics and statistics courses for all departments/study programs at Hasanuddin University. In 1973, the Pure Mathematics Study Program for the Bachelor's level was opened, so Diploma (B.Sc) students had to continue their studies in Java, particularly at ITB Bandung. In 1981, the Department of Mathematics began offering the Bachelor's program in Mathematics and was accredited in 1998 with a "B" rating.

Based on market demand and societal needs, in 1996 the Department of Mathematics opened the Statistics Study Program, as a result of a curriculum development workshop held by the Department of Mathematics in 1994 in Tana Toraja. The initiator of the Statistics Study Program was the late Drs. Muh. Yusuf Wahab, MS, after considering public interest, especially labor market needs. The establishment and operational permit of the Statistics Study Program in 1996 was based on the Decree of the Director General of Higher Education Number 234/DIKTI/Kep/1996, and it was accredited in 2006 with a "B" rating based on BAN-PT Decree No. 012/BAN-PT/Ak-X/S1/VIII/2006. The next accreditation, also with a "B" rating, was based on BAN-PT Decree Number 217/SK/BAN-PT/Ak-XVI/S/X/2013, dated October 26, 2013.

In 2019, the Statistics Study Program became the Department of Statistics, which was previously under the Department of Mathematics. Currently, the Department of Statistics oversees two study programs: the Undergraduate Statistics Study Program and the Master's Statistics Study Program.

The latest accreditation obtained by the Undergraduate Statistics Study Program is an "A" rating from BAN-PT Number: 3320/SK/BAN-PT/Akred/S/XII/2018. This accreditation is valid from December 19, 2018, to December 19, 2023. In addition, the Undergraduate Statistics Study Program also obtained international certification from AUN-QA in 2021 with Number: AP754UNHASNOV21. Meanwhile, the Master's Statistics Study Program was accredited as EXCELLENT by BAN-PT in 2021.
