HISTORY
The Biology Study Program at Hasanuddin University was established in 1963, when it was still part of the Faculty of Exact Sciences and Natural Sciences (FIPPA). In the early days until 1986, Biology students could only pursue education up to the Bachelor's degree level. To continue to the Master's degree level, graduates had to continue their studies at universities on the island of Java.
During the period 1977–1982, FIPPA and the Faculty of Engineering were merged into the Faculty of Science and Technology (FST). Subsequently, through Presidential Decree No. 68 of 1982, Biology was upgraded to the Department of Biology under the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences (FMIPA).
After occupying the Old Baraya Campus for 24 years, in 1987 the Biology Department officially moved to a new, more spacious campus in Tamalanrea. Since then, Biology students have been able to complete their studies up to the Bachelor's degree level. During the period 1986–1995, the Biology Department was also entrusted with organizing a Diploma Three (D-3) Biology program to educate prospective high school biology teachers in Eastern Indonesia.
Furthermore, from 2006 to 2010, the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences once again managed the Biology Education Teacher Training Program, which was a collaboration between the Ministry of National Education and Hasanuddin University. Since Hasanuddin University became a State-Owned Legal Entity University (PTNBH) in 2015, with new statutes effective since 2016, the name of the Biology Department was officially changed to the Department of Biology. Currently, the Department of Biology offers a Master's Degree Program (S-2) and is preparing to launch a Doctoral Degree Program (S-3).
