The Department of Biology at Hasanuddin University Hosts a Benchmarking Visit from the Biology Department at Mulawarman University

The Department of Biology, Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences (FMIPA), Hasanuddin University hosted a benchmarking visit from the Department of Biology, Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, Mulawarman University on Tuesday, July 21, 2026. This event served as a platform to strengthen inter-institutional cooperation and share best practices in higher education curriculum development.

The Mulawarman University delegation was led by the Chair of the Biology Department, Dr. Nova Hariani, S.Si., M.Si., accompanied by the Department Secretary, Dr. Fatmawati Patang, S.Si., M.Si. Upon arrival at Hasanuddin University, the delegation was first received by the Dean of the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences at Hasanuddin University. On this occasion, the Dean expressed his appreciation for the visit, which was part of efforts to improve the quality of higher education. Subsequently, the delegation was directed to carry out a benchmarking agenda at the Department of Biology, Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, Hasanuddin University.
The meeting at the Department of Biology was officially opened by the Chair of the Department of Biology, Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, Hasanuddin University, Dr. Magdalena Litaay, M.Sc., along with several faculty members and staff from the Department of Biology. In her opening remarks, she extended a warm welcome to the entire delegation from Mulawarman University and expressed her hope that this event would serve as a platform for exchanging experiences and strengthening academic networks between the two institutions.

The main focus of the benchmarking visit was to study the implementation of the 2023 Curriculum (K23) in the Biology Undergraduate Program at Hasanuddin University. During the presentation session, Dr. Magdalena Litaay explained the curriculum development process, curriculum structure, graduate learning outcomes (GLOs), the implementation of Outcome-Based Education (OBE), and the evaluation and quality assurance mechanisms applied in the implementation of the 2023 Curriculum. These various aspects were the primary focus of the Mulawarman University delegation as they work to refine the curriculum for their undergraduate Biology program.
The discussion took place in an interactive manner, reviewing various strategies for developing a curriculum that is adaptable to the dynamics of science, the needs of the workforce, and national higher education policies. The delegation from Mulawarman University also had the opportunity to learn about the experiences of the Department of Biology at Hasanuddin University in implementing a curriculum focused on enhancing graduate competencies.

On the same occasion, Prof. Dr. Dirayah R. Husain, DEA, provided guidance on the direction of curriculum development within the Department of Biology at the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, Hasanuddin University. She emphasized the importance of a curriculum capable of producing graduates who are competitive at both the national and international levels. In addition, Prof. Dirayah also shared her experiences regarding various strategies that have been implemented to improve the quality of education in the Department of Biology at Hasanuddin University.
Through this benchmarking activity, both institutions had the opportunity to share experiences, best practices, and innovations in the management of their academic programs. It is hoped that the outcomes of these discussions will serve as a reference for the development of the 2023 Curriculum in the Biology Undergraduate Program at Mulawarman University, while also strengthening academic collaboration between Mulawarman University and Hasanuddin University in the future.
