Unhas’s PPMU Enhances the Skills of Bulukumba’s Coastal Communities Through Training on Processing Nutritious Snacks Made from Fish and Seaweed

The Hasanuddin University Community Service Program (PPMU Unhas) once again carried out a community empowerment initiative by holding a training session on food processing using marine resources in Bulukumba Regency. Through this activity, coastal communities—particularly groups of women who process fishery products—were equipped with the skills to transform fish and seaweed into nutritious snacks with economic potential.

The training, which took place on June 26–27, 2026, aimed to encourage the use of local marine resources to create value-added food products. In addition to improving family nutrition, especially for children, this initiative is also expected to open up new business opportunities that can increase community income.

The event was led by the Chair of the Unhas PPMU Team, Dr. Magdalena Litaay, M.Sc., who emphasized the importance of optimizing the potential of coastal resources through food product innovation. During the training session, participants gained knowledge about the nutritional content of fish and seaweed, as well as hands-on experience in making fortified snacks that are safe, healthy, and marketable.

Through this community service program, Unhas’s PPMU is committed to supporting the empowerment of coastal communities by introducing innovations based on local potential. It is hoped that the skills acquired by the participants can be developed into productive businesses that not only contribute to meeting families’ nutritional needs but also strengthen the economy of coastal communities in the Bulukumba region.
