History

The Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering (PSTE) program under the Department of Electrical Engineering, Faculty of Engineering, Hasanuddin University (DTE FT UNHAS) was established in September 1963 as part of the expansion of the Faculty of Engineering (FT), which was founded on September 7, 1960. PSTE is the fourth undergraduate program administered by FT UNHAS. The FT UNHAS campus was originally located in Baraya, near the center of Ujung Pandang—the former name of Makassar. In the early 1980s, the UNHAS campus was moved to Tamalanrea, approximately 10 km northeast of downtown Makassar. More than 30 years later, the Faculty of Engineering was moved again to the Gowa Campus, 20 km south of Tamalanrea, and PSTE, under the Department of Electrical Engineering (DTE) of the Faculty of Engineering at UNHAS, officially settled at the Gowa Campus in 2017 following a phased relocation that began in 2015.

During its early years following its establishment in the mid-1960s, the majority of PSTE FT UNHAS students continued their studies and completed their bachelor’s degrees at two major universities in Indonesia: Gadjah Mada University (UGM) in Yogyakarta and the Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB) in Bandung. The majority of graduates from this period pursued careers as academics, engineers at state-owned electric power (PLN) and telecommunications (TELKOM) companies, or started their own private companies related to the electric power and telecommunications industries.

Starting with the class that entered in 1980, the PSTE FT UNHAS curriculum was split in the 4th (fourth) semester into 2 (two) sub-programs: Electrical Power Engineering (TTL) and Telecommunications and Electronics Engineering (TTE). Fifteen years later, in 1995, the PSTE FT UNHAS—which by then had become the Department of Electrical Engineering—was expanded into three (3) concentrations: Electrical Power Engineering (TEL), Telecommunications and Information Systems Engineering (TT & SI), and Computer, Control, and Electronics Engineering (TKKE). The curriculum split continued to be implemented in the fourth semester. This 1995 curriculum remained in effect for 20 years, with revisions every five years.

In 2015, in accordance with UNHAS’s new organizational structure—now operating as a Public University with Special Status (PTN-BH)—the concentrations were abolished, necessitating a complete overhaul of the curriculum structure. In 2016, an R&D-based curriculum was implemented, consisting of 4 (four) semesters of fundamental coursework, 2 (two) semesters of elective course packages to develop competencies, and 2 (two) final semesters focused on laboratory work or R&D.

Accreditation is an assessment of the eligibility and ranking of a study program or department conducted by the National Accreditation Board for Higher Education (BAN-PT) and serves as recognition by other agencies or institutions. Currently, the PSTE FT UNHAS has received an “EXCELLENT” accreditation rating from LAM Teknik PII based on Decision Letter No. 0008/SK/LAM Teknik/PYT/V/2022, valid from May 30, 2022, through March 31, 2024. PSTE FT UNHAS has also held international accreditation from the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET) since 2018. In 2021, PSTE FT UNHAS received accreditation from the Indonesian Accreditation Board for Engineering Education (IABEE).

Throughout its long history, PSTE FT UNHAS has established the Computer Science (Engineering) Study Program, which is now accredited with an “A” rating. The Master’s Program in Electrical Engineering is also accredited with an “A,” while the Doctoral Program in Electrical Engineering, approved in early 2016, has been accredited with a “B.” PSTE FT UNHAS has on several occasions organized diploma programs in collaboration with various institutions and state-owned enterprises (BUMN), including a D1 program with PT. PLN (Persero), D3 and S1 (Extension) programs with PT. Telkom (Tbk), a D3 program in Computer and Network Engineering (TKJ) with the Ministry of National Education (Depdiknas), and others. In addition to collaborations in the delivery of educational programs, PSTE FT UNHAS also partners with various parties in the fields of research and community service; among these, a long-standing research collaboration with the Ministry of Communication and Information Technology has been ongoing for many years. Collaborations with various parties—both within UNHAS and externally—are also carried out individually or in groups by each member of the PSTE FT UNHAS faculty in various teaching, research, and community service activities.

The operations of PSTE FT UNHAS are carried out in accordance with its vision and mission, which are formulated based on the vision and mission of FT UNHAS—itself derived from the vision and mission of UNHAS. In addition to referring to the vision and mission of the faculty and the university, PSTE FT UNHAS also takes into account the results of existing SWOT analyses, as well as suggestions and input from alumni, employers of graduates, and the advisory board.
