Unhas Vocational Students Participate in Abattoir Practicum at Harapan Baru Farm Sidrap RPA
SIDRAP – Students of the Animal Production Technology Study Program, Faculty of Vocational Studies, Hasanuddin University, conducted an Abattoir Practicum at the Harapan Baru Farm RPA in Sidenreng Rappang Regency. This activity is part of applied learning aimed at providing a hands-on understanding of the poultry slaughtering process in accordance with technical, sanitation, and animal welfare standards.
Sidrap Regency was chosen as the practicum location because it is known as one of the largest poultry farming centers in South Sulawesi, making it a relevant location for students to learn about industrial-level poultry slaughtering practices.
In this practicum, students learned about the operational stages of the RPA, from receiving and handling live chickens, through the slaughtering process, plucking feathers, evisceration, and post-slaughter carcass handling. Students were also introduced to hygiene and sanitation practices, waste management, and animal welfare principles throughout the slaughtering process.
In addition to technical aspects, students gained an understanding of the implementation of Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) at the RPA, including aspects of food safety and occupational safety and health (K3). This course aims to provide students with a comprehensive and professional understanding of the slaughterhouse workflow.
Through this abattoir practicum, students not only conduct observations but are also trained to analyze the compliance of the poultry slaughtering process with applicable standards, as well as to understand the strategic role of the slaughterhouse in ensuring the quality, safety, and suitability of poultry products distributed to the public.
The abattoir practicum at Harapan Baru Farm Sidrap RPA is expected to improve students' competency in poultry post-harvest, while also providing essential skills for students in the Animal Production Technology Study Program, Faculty of Vocational Studies, Hasanuddin University, to prepare them for the world of work in the poultry and livestock processing industries.
