History

The Department of Mathematics was established in 1963 as part of the Faculty of Exact and Natural Sciences (FIPPA). Subsequently, in 1977, the Department of Mathematics became part of the Faculty of Science and Technology based on the Decree of the Minister of Education and Culture No. 0266/Q/1977. Currently, the Department of Mathematics is one of the departments under the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences (FMIPA). The Doctoral Program in Mathematics is one of five study programs under the Department of Mathematics, together with the Undergraduate Program in Mathematics, Master’s Program in Mathematics, Actuarial Science Program, and Information Systems Program.

The Doctoral Program in Mathematics was established on July 24, 2019, in accordance with the Decree of the Rector of Hasanuddin University Number 3875/UN4.1/KEP/2019 and the Decree of the National Accreditation Board for Higher Education (BAN-PT) Number 38/SK/BAN-PT/Min-Akred/D/VII/2019, dated July 24, 2019, with a Minimum Accreditation status. The Doctoral Program in Mathematics began admitting four new students in the even semester of the 2019/2020 academic year. New student admissions are conducted every semester, and the number of active students in 2024 was 16. To date, the Doctoral Program in Mathematics has produced 11 alumni, one of whom was accepted as a researcher at BRIN in 2024. Meanwhile, the other alumni generally work as lecturers at higher education institutions.

The Doctoral Program in Mathematics applied for accreditation in 2021 and received a “Good” accreditation rating in accordance with the Decree of the National Accreditation Board for Higher Education Number 9869/SK/BAN-PT/Ak-PKP/D/VIII/2021, dated August 3, 2021. The accreditation application submitted in July 2021 subsequently obtained its final result. BAN-PT Decree No. 12225/SK/BAN-PT/Akred/D/XI/2021, dated November 9, 2021, granted the program a “Very Good” accreditation rating with a score of 304, thereby rendering the previous BAN-PT Decree Number 9869/SK/BAN-PT/Ak-PKP/D/VIII/2021 no longer valid. The Decree of the National Accreditation Board for Higher Education BAN-PT No. 338/SK/BAN-PT/AK-ISK/PT/VII/2022, dated July 12, 2022, which granted Hasanuddin University an “Excellent” accreditation rating, further complemented the accreditation requirements of the Doctoral Program in Mathematics.

Until now, the Doctoral Program in Mathematics has implemented an education system through a coursework-based pathway. Referring to Hasanuddin University Rector Regulation No. 31/UN4.1/KEP/2023 concerning the Implementation of Doctoral Programs at Hasanuddin University, the 2025 Curriculum also provides a research-based pathway to offer greater flexibility for prospective students in pursuing doctoral education at Hasanuddin University.

Since its establishment, the Doctoral Program in Mathematics was led by Prof. Dr. Jeffry Kusuma as Head of the Study Program until September 2023. The leadership of the program was then continued by Prof. Dr. Syamsuddin Toaha, M.Sc., who serves as the current Head of the Study Program. To date, the Doctoral Program in Mathematics is supported by a team of lecturers with doctoral qualifications in various areas of competence related to Mathematics. A total of 27 lecturers with doctoral qualifications serve as teaching staff in the Doctoral Program in Mathematics, 16 of whom hold the academic rank of Professor. These teaching staff are graduates of domestic universities, including ITB, UGM, IPB, ITS, UNNES, UNAIR, UPI, and UNHAS, while others are graduates of overseas universities in countries such as Australia, Japan, Germany, Malaysia, and others.
