History

The Department of Mathematics was established in 1963 as part of the Faculty of Exact Sciences and Natural Sciences (FIPPA). Subsequently, in 1977, the Department of Mathematics became part of the Faculty of Science and Technology through Decree of the Minister of Education and Culture No. 0266/Q/1977. Today, the Department of Mathematics is one of the departments under the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences (FMIPA), overseeing five study programs, namely the Bachelor's Program in Mathematics, the Master's Program in Mathematics, the Doctoral Program in Mathematics, the Actuarial Science Program, and the Information Systems Program.

The Doctoral Program in Mathematics was established on July 24, 2019, based on Decree of the Rector of Hasanuddin University Number 3875/UN4.1/KEP/2019, and obtained minimum accreditation through Decree of the National Accreditation Board for Higher Education (BAN-PT) Number 38/SK/BAN-PT/Min-Akred/D/VII/2019 dated July 24, 2019. The program began admitting 4 (four) new students in the Even Semester of the 2019/2020 Academic Year. New student admissions have since been conducted every semester, and as of 2024 the number of active students stood at 16 (sixteen). To date, the Doctoral Program in Mathematics has produced 11 (eleven) graduates. One of them was accepted as a researcher at BRIN in 2024, while the other graduates generally work as lecturers at various universities.

In terms of accreditation, the Doctoral Program in Mathematics submitted its accreditation application in July 2021 and initially received a "Good" accreditation rating based on BAN-PT Decree Number 9869/SK/BAN-PT/Ak-PKP/D/VIII/2021 dated August 3, 2021. This rating was later upgraded to "Very Good" with a score of 304 through BAN-PT Decree Number 12225/SK/BAN-PT/Akred/D/XI/2021 dated November 9, 2021, which rendered the previous decree (Number 9869/SK/BAN-PT/Ak-PKP/D/VIII/2021) null and void. In addition, Hasanuddin University's "Excellent" ("Unggul") institutional accreditation status, granted through BAN-PT Decree No. [number to be verified], dated July 12, 2022, further complements the accreditation achievements of the Doctoral Program in Mathematics.

To date, the Doctoral Program in Mathematics has offered education through the coursework track. Referring to Unhas Rector Regulation No. 31/UN4.1/KEP/2023 on the Administration of Doctoral Programs at Hasanuddin University, the 2025 Curriculum also introduces a research track to provide prospective students with greater flexibility in pursuing doctoral studies at Unhas.

Since its establishment, the Doctoral Program in Mathematics was led by Prof. Dr. Jeffry Kusuma until September 2023, after which leadership of the program was continued by Prof. Dr. Syamsuddin Toaha, M.Sc., up to the present. The program is supported by 27 (twenty-seven) faculty members holding doctoral (S3) qualifications across various fields of mathematical expertise, 16 (sixteen) of whom hold the academic rank of Professor. These faculty members are graduates of various domestic universities (ITB, UGM, IPB, ITS, UNNES, UNAIR, UPI, and UNHAS) as well as universities abroad (Australia, Japan, Germany, Malaysia, and others).
