Biotechnology-Based Chemistry Learning Using a Natural-Product Exploration Approach Through Lesson Study at the Secondary School Level in Wajo Regency

On November 30, 2024, the Department of Chemistry, Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, Hasanuddin University (Unhas), carried out a community service program at Pondok Pesantren Nurmilad Boarding School, Wajo. The Chemistry Department team arrived at the school and was warmly welcomed by the Head of the Education Office, Drs. Dwi Apryanto, SH, MT, M.Si. He expressed his appreciation for the collaboration between the university and the school, which is expected to make a positive contribution to improving the quality of secondary education in Wajo Regency.
During the workshop, Dr. Nur Umriani Permatasari, M.Si shared her insights to strengthen teachers’ understanding and skills in integrating biotechnology into chemistry learning, as well as introducing the lesson study technique to enhance teaching quality. The participants—especially the teachers and students of Nurmilad Boarding School—were highly engaged throughout the session. They also had the opportunity to explore lesson study simulations and gain an immersive, interactive learning experience.
The Head of the Education and Culture Office of Wajo Regency, through his representative, expressed gratitude to the Unhas community service team for the contributions and knowledge shared. He conveyed his hope that this activity would continue to enhance the quality of education in schools, providing better learning experiences for both teachers and students.
This workshop and outreach effort not only strengthened the bond between academic institutions and education practitioners but also fostered optimism for stronger synergy in the future. The spirit of collaboration is expected to keep growing, supporting the improvement of education quality across schools in Indonesia.
