The Actuarial Science Study Program at Hasanuddin University was officially opened on July 15, 2019, based on the Decree of the Rector of Unhas, No. 3676 / UN4. 1 / KEP / 2019 and the Decision of the National Accreditation Board for Higher Education (BAN PT) No. 34/SK-BAN PT/Min-Akred/S/VII/2019. The background for the establishment of the Actuarial Science Study Program at Hasanuddin University was to anticipate developments in higher education in Indonesia at that time, where the Indonesian government collaborated with the Canadian government to implement a Cooperative Program for the Development of Actuarial Science Study Programs in Indonesia, known as the Risk Management, Economic Sustainability, and Actuarial Science Development in Indonesia (READI) Project. This program was launched as an effort by the Indonesian government to address the shortage of actuarial experts in Indonesia. The shortage of actuarial experts could lead to a high dependence on foreign actuarial experts. Therefore, in order to meet the long-term need for domestic actuarial experts, the government sought to establish Actuarial Science Study Programs at several universities in Indonesia.
Hasanuddin University, as a renowned university in Indonesia, actively participates in supporting the READI PROGRAM. Therefore, the leadership of Hasanuddin University has assigned several lecturers from the Department of Mathematics, Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, to participate in a number of activities under the READIt program as part of the preparation for establishing the Actuarial Science program since 2017. Thanks to the hard work of the Founding Team of the Actuarial Science Program in the Mathematics Department and with full support from the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, the Academic Senate of Hasanuddin University, the Board of Trustees of Hasanuddin University, and the Actuarial Study Program at the University of Waterloo, on July 15, 2019, the Rector's Decision on the Establishment of the Unhas Actuarial Science Undergraduate Program was issued, followed by the BAN PT Decision on the Unhas Actuarial Science Program on July 24, 2019.
Teaching and learning activities in the Actuarial Science Study Program began in 2019. These activities are carried out by approximately 14 lecturers with educational backgrounds including 2 professors, 6 doctors, and 6 masters from the Actuarial Science, Mathematics, Information Systems, Economics, and Accounting Study Programs. There are 3 educational staff with bachelor's degrees as administrative staff and 2 supporting staff who also assist as administrative staff. The student capacity is around 50 per year, adjusted to the available academic staff. The curriculum of the Unhas Actuarial Science Study Program, which serves as a reference for teaching and learning activities, is compiled based on the results of benchmarking from several Actuarial Science Study Program organizers in Indonesia and abroad and is supervised by the Actuarial Science Study Program, University of Waterloo, Canada.
The Actuarial Science Study Program has a Big Data Laboratory to support the development of data science-based actuarial science. The fields of study developed are Financial Risk Management, Life Insurance, General Insurance, Pension Fund Theory, Investment Theory, and Financial Data Science. The number of active students in the odd semester of the 2022/2023 academic year is 183. The Merdeka Belajar Kampus Merdeka (MBKM) program has also been and is currently being implemented. The MBKM programs implemented include Student Exchange, Internships in the Financial Industry, Independent Study, and Practitioner Teaching.
