Maintenance of the Diponegoro Mausoleum Complex, a Cultural Heritage Site in Makassar

The conservation of cultural heritage sites is mandated by Law No. 11 of 2010, which emphasises preventive and curative measures to preserve the authenticity, historical value and continued functionality of the nation’s heritage. These measures encompass routine maintenance, zoning protection and technical studies that support the protection, revitalisation and utilisation of cultural heritage sites as venues for education, research and tourism.

In 2026, the City of Makassar, through the Department of Culture, has allocated a special budget for the maintenance of the Diponegoro Mausoleum Complex, which was designated last year as a national-level cultural heritage site. This step is a vital part of preserving the physical integrity and historical value of the site, whilst strengthening the nation’s cultural identity.

This initiative involves a strategic collaboration with the Department of Archaeology at the Faculty of Humanities, Hasanuddin University, through the involvement of cultural heritage experts. This collaboration ensures that all maintenance work is carried out to scientific standards, taking into account the technical aspects of conservation, whilst prioritising the historical and spiritual significance inherent in the site.

The primary objectives of the maintenance work:
- Protection: preventing damage and preserving authenticity.
- Revitalisation: restoring value for the younger generation.
- Use: to use the site as a space for education, research and cultural tourism.

Dr Yadi Mulyadi, Head of the Department of Archaeology at the Faculty of Humanities, University of Hasanuddin, stated that: “Our involvement in the maintenance of the Diponegoro Tomb Complex is both an expression of our academic responsibility and a form of community service. With the support of cultural heritage experts, we strive to ensure that every conservation measure not only preserves the physical integrity of the site, but also brings to life the historical and spiritual values it embodies.”

With the support of site custodians, institutional coordination, and collaborative funding, it is hoped that this conservation effort will serve as a model for the preservation of cultural heritage in Indonesia.
