Public Lecture: Becoming an Archaeologist Who Enjoys Their Work
The Department of Archaeology, Faculty of Cultural Sciences, Hasanuddin University, is hosting a public lecture entitled “Being an Enjoyable Archaeologist: Science, Tales of Adventure, and Stories from the Past”. The event will take place on Thursday, 7 May 2026, in rooms FIB 213–214, from 09:00 to 11:30 WITA.
The public lecture featured Dr Widya Nayati, M.A., an archaeologist from Gadjah Mada University who is widely recognised for her research in Islamic and maritime archaeology. She shared her academic experiences as well as tales of fieldwork adventures, demonstrating how archaeology is not merely a science, but also a meaningful journey in understanding the past.
The event was attended by Archaeology students from the 2025 cohort, as well as lecturers from the Department of Archaeology. The presence of both lecturers and students in the same lecture hall fostered a warm, interactive atmosphere and reinforced the philosophy of field education that characterises learning within the Archaeology Undergraduate Programme at the Faculty of Humanities, University of Hasanuddin.
Through this public lecture, students were encouraged to view archaeology as an enjoyable discipline, full of stories, and relevant to life. As Dr Widya Nayati explained, archaeology is not merely about excavating artefacts, but also about connecting people with cultural heritage and the environment.
