Japanese Literature Department Holds Hybrid Workshop on Textbook Writing to Enhance Teaching Quality
Makassar – The Department of Japanese Literature, Faculty of Cultural Sciences (FIB), Hasanuddin University (UNHAS), held a Hybrid Workshop on Textbook Writing Techniques on Wednesday, (29/4). The workshop featured Mila Sari, S.ST., M.Si., a lecturer and experienced author in textbook development and academic publishing, and was attended by faculty members of the department. The workshop was organized as part of the department’s commitment to strengthening the quality of teaching and learning through the development of well-designed instructional materials. Participants were introduced to key principles of textbook writing, including curriculum alignment, learning outcomes, and effective content organization.
During her presentation, Mila Sari emphasized that textbooks should be viewed as learning tools designed to help students achieve specific course learning outcomes rather than merely serving as compilations of theoretical knowledge.
“A textbook is a tool for achieving Course Learning Outcomes (CPMK). Therefore, its development must be aligned with Graduate Learning Outcomes (CPL), Course Learning Outcomes (CPMK), and the Course Learning Plan (RPS). A textbook is not simply a collection of theories, but a learning resource specifically designed to support students in achieving the intended competencies,” Mila Sari explained during the workshop.
She further highlighted the importance of ensuring coherence between learning outcomes, learning indicators, and instructional content throughout the textbook development process. According to her, effective textbooks should be tailored to the characteristics of the course, the level of study, and the competencies expected from students.
The workshop also provided an interactive forum where participants exchanged ideas and experiences regarding the challenges and opportunities of developing high-quality teaching materials in higher education.
Chair of the organizing committee, Hadi Hidayat, S.S., M.Hum., expressed his hope that the workshop would contribute significantly to the department’s efforts to improve educational quality.
“We hope that the discussions, feedback, and recommendations generated during this workshop will serve as a strong foundation for developing high-quality and innovative textbooks that support the continuous improvement of education within the Department of Japanese Literature,” said Hadi.
He noted that textbooks play a strategic role in supporting curriculum implementation and ensuring that learning activities are conducted systematically and effectively.
By conducting the workshop in a hybrid format, the department enabled broader participation from lecturers attending both in person and online. The event reflects the department’s ongoing efforts to foster academic excellence and encourage the development of instructional resources that are responsive to students’ learning needs.
Through this initiative, the Department of Japanese Literature hopes to produce textbooks that not only meet academic standards but also enhance learning effectiveness and contribute to the achievement of intended learning outcomes in higher education.
