South Sulawesi BPS and Unhas Statistics Corner Strengthen Coordination of the 2026 Economic Census

Makassar, August 26, 2026 — The Statistics Corner of Hasanuddin University received a visit from the South Sulawesi Provincial Statistics Agency (BPS) as part of monitoring and coordination activities for the implementation of the 2026 Economic Census (SE2026) within Hasanuddin University.

Held on Wednesday, August 26, 2026, from 10:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. WITA at the Statistics Corner Room of Hasanuddin University, the event discussed the progress of SE2026, particularly regarding the data collection of various business units and economic activities within the campus environment.

The discussion focused on efforts to obtain a more complete picture of economic activities within Hasanuddin University, both conventionally run businesses and those operating through digital platforms. Several aspects covered included the identification of business units within the campus, businesses managed by the university, partners and cooperatives, trade and service activities, as well as businesses conducted through digital media.

The Hasanuddin University environment has a variety of economic activities with potential to be included in the 2026 Economic Census data collection. The coordination discussed matters such as food and beverage businesses like canteens and stalls, trading businesses, student cooperatives, building and facility rental services, partnership-based businesses, and sales and promotional activities through marketplaces and social media.

Through this activity, the Unhas Statistics Corner, together with related parties, will carry out an initial mapping of the various business units within the university environment. This mapping is expected to support the data collection process so that economic activities on campus can be better identified, providing a more comprehensive picture of the characteristics of economic activities. This effort is in line with Hasanuddin University's commitment to supporting SDG 8: Decent Work and Economic Growth, particularly through strengthening the availability of economic data that can serve as a basis for evidence-based planning and decision-making.

The coordination also discussed opportunities for student involvement in the implementation of SE2026. The South Sulawesi Provincial BPS and Hasanuddin University discussed the mechanisms for socialization and recruitment of students who could potentially become 2026 Economic Census officers. Information about SE2026, opportunities for student involvement, and the requirements for officers will be disseminated through the Statistics Corner and student communication channels.

Students selected as prospective officers will later receive briefings on data collection concepts, procedures, ethics, and the use of the data collection system prior to fieldwork. This involvement is expected to give students direct experience in understanding the process of official statistical data collection while strengthening their competencies in official statistical activities.

This monitoring and coordination activity also serves as part of strengthening the synergy between the South Sulawesi Provincial BPS and Hasanuddin University through the Statistics Corner. This collaboration will continue to be developed to support the smooth implementation of the 2026 Economic Census and to enhance statistical literacy within Hasanuddin University. This inter-institutional synergy also reflects the implementation of SDG 17: Partnerships for the Goals, through collaboration between higher education institutions and government agencies in supporting the provision of quality data and strengthening human resource capacity in the field of statistics.

Through this activity, the Statistics Corner of Hasanuddin University is expected to increasingly serve as a space for education, consultation, and collaboration that brings official statistics closer to the academic community. The collaboration between BPS and Hasanuddin University is also expected to strengthen the culture of data utilization and encourage increasingly evidence-based decision-making, both within the campus and in society.
