BDLP Students Conduct Field Practice on Barrang Lompo Island, Makassar

Makassar — Students from the Marine and Coastal Aquaculture Study Program (BDLP), Faculty of Vocational Studies, Hasanuddin University, carried out a field practice activity at the Hasanuddin University Marine Station, Barrang Lompo Island, on October 20–21, 2025. The activity was attended by 47 students from the 2024 and 2025 cohorts, accompanied by four lecturers and three student assistants.

The field practice is part of an experiential learning program designed to strengthen students’ understanding of theoretical concepts through hands-on experience in coastal and marine environments. Students from the 2025 cohort participated in field practice for the courses Ichthyology of Aquaculture Organisms, Larval Rearing Techniques, Marine and Estuarine Ecology, and Invertebrates of Aquaculture Organisms. Meanwhile, the 2024 cohort conducted field practice for the courses Aquaculture Disease Management, Aquaculture Engineering, Broodstock Maturation and Spawning Techniques, and Ornamental Fish Culture.

During the activity, students visited several key locations that served as observation and practice sites, including the Hasanuddin University Hatchery, CV. Dinar, and seagrass ecosystems around Barrang Lompo Island. Through these visits, students had the opportunity to learn directly about aquaculture techniques, aquatic organism health management, and the interaction between natural ecosystems and aquaculture systems.

In her opening remarks, Dr. Dian Novita Sari, A.Md., S.Pi., M.Si., Head of the BDLP Study Program, emphasized that the field practice serves as a contextual learning platform bridging theoretical knowledge and practical application. “Students not only observe how aquaculture systems operate but also learn to analyze real-world problems and develop on-site solutions,” she stated.

The activity ran smoothly and was met with great enthusiasm. Students gained valuable experiences that not only enhanced their technical competencies but also fostered collaboration, critical thinking, and awareness of marine resource sustainability.

Through this program, the BDLP Study Program reaffirms its commitment to providing experiential and practice-oriented learning, a hallmark of vocational education in the field of marine and fisheries science.
