Public Discussion on the Role of Fisheries Business Actors in Supporting Regional Food Security

SELAYAR – The Fisheries Department of Selayar Islands Regency, together with various related parties, held a public discussion themed “The Role of Fisheries Business Actors in Supporting Regional Food Security” at the Vocational Campus of Hasanuddin University in the Selayar Islands on Saturday, May 16, 2026.

The activity served as a platform for discussion and exchange of ideas among the government, academics, and fisheries business actors in encouraging the development of a sustainable fisheries sector capable of supporting regional food security, particularly in Selayar Islands Regency.

During the discussion, the development of saline tilapia commodities became one of the main topics highlighted. This commodity was considered to have strong potential to be developed as one of the leading aquaculture sectors capable of supporting the increase of regional fisheries production.

In addition to discussing the development potential of saline tilapia, participants also highlighted several challenges faced by the sector, including the need for fish seed supply and the development of independent feed production for fish farmers. These issues were considered important to address in order to support the sustainability of aquaculture businesses in the region.

As part of the effort to respond to these challenges, several strategic solutions were also discussed, including the development of hatcheries within the vocational education environment, collaboration with MBG, fishery product processing, and the identification and utilization of local raw materials as sources for independent feed production. These measures are expected to strengthen the aquaculture sector while increasing the self-reliance of fisheries business actors in Selayar.

Through this public discussion, it is hoped that stronger synergy will be established among the government, higher education institutions, and business actors in supporting the development of a competitive and sustainable fisheries sector to enhance regional food security.
