Students and Lecturers of the BDLP Study Program Attend the Nobel Laureate Lecture at Hasanuddin University

Makassar, January 29, 2026 — Students and lecturers of the Marine and Coastal Aquaculture Study Program (PS. BDLP), Faculty of Vocational Studies, Hasanuddin University, attended the prestigious Nobel Laureate Lecture held at Baruga A.P. Pettarani, Hasanuddin University, on Thursday, January 29, 2026, from 8:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. WITA (Central Indonesian Time).

Themed "Chemistry for a Sustainable World – Everything is Chemistry and How That Influences Our Choices," the lecture featured Prof. Morten P. Meldal, winner of the 2022 Nobel Prize in Chemistry, as the keynote speaker. This event provided a special opportunity for the Unhas academic community to gain firsthand insights from world-class scientists.

Nobel Laureate Lecture at Hasanuddin University

The Nobel Laureate Lecture was officially opened by Prof. Brian Yuliarto, Minister of Higher Education, Science, and Technology of the Republic of Indonesia, and was also attended by the Rector of Hasanuddin University, Prof. Dr. Ir. Jamaluddin Jompa, M.Sc., and the university's leadership. In his remarks, the Minister emphasized the importance of mastering basic science, particularly chemistry, as a foundation for addressing global challenges, including issues of sustainability, technological innovation, and responsible natural resource management.

In his presentation, Prof. Morten P. Meldal stated, "Chemistry never dies." Prof. Meldal also explained how chemistry plays a significant role in almost all aspects of human life, from health and food to energy and the environment. He also highlighted the importance of science-based decision-making for realizing sustainable development in the future.

The presence of students and lecturers from the Department of Marine and Fisheries Sciences (PS. BDLP) at this event reflects the study program's commitment to broadening interdisciplinary scientific knowledge, particularly the interrelationships between chemistry, marine science, and sustainable aquaculture. Chemistry plays a crucial role in aquaculture, from water quality management and feed nutrition to environmentally friendly aquaculture management.

Through participation in this Nobel Laureate Lecture, the Faculty of Vocational Studies (PS. BDLP) of Hasanuddin University hopes that students and lecturers will be inspired to continue developing critical, innovative, and sustainability-oriented thinking, in line with global challenges in the marine and fisheries sector.

This activity also strengthens Hasanuddin University's position as a center for scientific development open to global collaboration and international scientific dialogue.
