History of the Soppeng Campus, Faculty of Vocational Studies, Hasanuddin University

The Hasanuddin University Campus in Soppeng Regency stands as an important milestone in expanding access to higher vocational education in South Sulawesi. Operating under the Faculty of Vocational Studies, Hasanuddin University, the campus was officially inaugurated on 23 March 2021, coinciding with the 760th Anniversary of Soppeng Regency. This occasion symbolized the synergy between the local government and higher education institutions in providing quality education closer to the community. Located in the Ompo area of Soppeng Regency, the campus features architectural designs inspired by Bugis local wisdom, reflecting regional cultural identity while embracing the modernization of vocational education.

The establishment of Hasanuddin University Soppeng Campus was driven by the need for equal access to higher education, particularly vocational education oriented toward practical skills and job readiness. Previously, people in Soppeng and surrounding areas had to travel considerable distances to access quality higher education. The presence of this campus addresses that challenge by offering a more affordable, practical, and regionally relevant education system.

As a vocational campus, Hasanuddin University Soppeng is designed to produce graduates with technical competence, professionalism, and adaptability to industry and business environments. One of its flagship study programs is the Aquaculture Technology and Fisheries Post-Harvest Study Program. This program is highly strategic considering that Soppeng Regency and South Sulawesi have great potential in inland fisheries, aquaculture, fisheries product processing, and the development of enterprises based on local resources.

The Aquaculture Technology and Fisheries Post-Harvest Study Program was established to meet the demand for skilled professionals in aquaculture production from upstream to downstream sectors. In the upstream sector, students are equipped with knowledge and skills in hatchery techniques, feed management, water quality management, fish health, modern aquaculture technology, and the implementation of sustainable aquaculture systems. These competencies are essential for increasing the productivity of freshwater fish farming and other fisheries commodities with strong development potential in Soppeng Regency.

Meanwhile, in the downstream sector, students are also prepared in post-harvest handling and fisheries product processing. Learning materials include fish preservation techniques, quality control, product packaging, processed product innovation, food safety, and creative industry-based marketing. Through this approach, graduates are not only ready to work in industry but also have strong potential to become young entrepreneurs capable of creating added value from local fisheries commodities.

The presence of the Aquaculture Technology and Fisheries Post-Harvest Study Program at Hasanuddin University Soppeng Campus also holds strategic value in supporting regional economic development. Soppeng Regency possesses freshwater resources with strong potential for aquaculture development, making the presence of competent experts and vocational graduates highly beneficial for improving community productivity. In addition, the development of the post-harvest sector will encourage the growth of household industries, SMEs, and competitive fisheries-based processed product centers.

Since its inauguration, Hasanuddin University Soppeng Campus has continued to develop as a center of vocational education that adapts to contemporary needs. Support from the local government, industry, and the community has become a major strength in building a productive educational ecosystem. Through the Aquaculture Technology and Fisheries Post-Harvest Study Program, the campus serves not only as a place of learning, but also as a center for innovation, applied research, and community service in the fisheries sector.

Thus, the history of the establishment of Hasanuddin University Soppeng Campus is not merely a story of constructing educational buildings, but of bringing new hope to the community. The campus is clear evidence of Hasanuddin University’s commitment to expanding educational access, producing high-quality human resources, and promoting regional progress through relevant and future-oriented vocational education.
