The Ocean Engineering Study Program at Universitas Hasanuddin traces its origins to the Offshore Structures sub-program within the Department of Naval Architecture, Faculty of Engineering, which was established in 1995. This initiative emerged in response to the growing need for the development of ocean engineering expertise capable of addressing challenges in maritime infrastructure development, marine resource exploration, and the complex dynamics of Indonesia's vast and strategically important coastal and offshore regions.
As student interest increased and the scope of academic disciplines expanded to include offshore structures, port engineering, and coastal engineering, the sub-program gradually evolved into the Bachelor's Program in Ocean Engineering . The program officially received authorization to operate in 2001 and began admitting students in the 2002/2003 academic year, marking an important milestone in strengthening ocean engineering education in Eastern Indonesia.
Throughout its development, the Bachelor's Program in Ocean Engineering has demonstrated consistent growth in student enrollment, graduate quality, and research contributions. These achievements are reflected in the program's Unggul (Excellent) accreditation awarded by the National Accreditation Board for Higher Education (BAN-PT), as well as its international accreditation by the Indonesian Accreditation Board for Engineering Education (IABEE) . These recognitions highlight the program's commitment to educational standards aligned with global requirements in ocean engineering and marine resource management.
The strong interest among graduates in pursuing advanced academic qualifications, combined with the limited availability of similar postgraduate programs in Eastern Indonesia, encouraged Universitas Hasanuddin to establish the Master's Program in Ocean Engineering . The establishment of this program represents a strategic response to the increasing demand for highly qualified professionals equipped with advanced analytical, research, and innovation capabilities in ocean engineering and maritime-related fields.
The Master's Program in Ocean Engineering at Universitas Hasanuddin is designed to adopt a multidisciplinary approach, emphasizing research-based and laboratory-supported learning while addressing real-world challenges faced by industry and society. By integrating engineering, management, and marine-related public policy, the program aspires to become a center of excellence in ocean science, engineering, and technology , with strong national and global competitiveness. Through education, research, and innovation, the program is expected to make meaningful contributions to the advancement of sustainable maritime development in Indonesia and beyond.
