History of the Master of Statistics Study Program

The Statistics Study Program is one of three undergraduate programs managed by the Department of Mathematics, Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, Hasanuddin University (Unhas). Established in 1991, the program was officially established in 1995 as a field of study. The name "Statistics Study Program" was standardized in 1996 with the issuance of Decree of the Minister of Education and Culture No. 234/DIKTI/Kep/1996, dated June 11, 1996, concerning undergraduate study programs at Unhas. Until 2019, the Statistics Study Program was under the management of the Department of Mathematics. Based on academic records, the program accepts 70 to 90 students annually, who are selected through the SNMPTN (National Selection for State Universities Entrance), SBMPTN (National Selection for State Universities Entrance), and Independent Selection. Currently, the Statistics Study Program has 14 lecturers, consisting of 6 doctoral graduates and 8 master's graduates.

Since its inception, the Statistics Study Program has submitted several accreditation applications to the National Accreditation Board for Higher Education (BAN-PT). The first accreditation applications were submitted in 2006, 2013, and 2018. Until 2013, the Statistics Study Program was accredited with a B grade, based on Decree No. 217/SK/BAN-PT/Ak-XVI/S/X/2013. This accreditation was valid for the 2013-2018 period. At the end of 2018, the Statistics Study Program underwent reaccreditation and successfully obtained an A grade, in accordance with BAN-PT Decree No. 3320/SK/BAN-PT/Akred/S/XII/2018, which is valid from December 19, 2018, to December 19, 2023. In line with increasing resource availability, the Department of Statistics was established in April 2019, which houses the Undergraduate Statistics Study Program.

To prepare students to become Master of Statistics graduates skilled in utilizing and applying statistics in various fields, the Master of Statistics Study Program was launched on July 24, 2019, with Rector's Decree No. 3874/UN4.1/KEP/2019. Thus, the Department of Statistics officially has two study programs: the Bachelor of Statistics Study Program and the Master of Statistics Study Program, starting in 2019.

The Master of Statistics study program, established in 2019 under the Department of Statistics, was initially taught by seven doctoral lecturers. The first cohort of seven students was admitted in the second semester of the 2019/2020 academic year. Thankfully, all of them graduated in 2024. According to the Department of Statistics' academic records, the Master of Statistics Program currently has approximately 80 active students from eight cohorts, from 2020 to 2023. Although only a few students from the 2020 cohort remain, they are in the process of completing their final assignments.

Since its establishment and standardization, the Statistics Master's Program has only submitted an Accreditation Assessment Form once, namely in 2021. This first accreditation received a score of 305 and a Very Good predicate based on the Decree of the National Accreditation Board for Higher Education (BAN-PT) in 2021 with number 13099/SK/BAN-PT/Akred/M/XII/2021, which is valid for the period 2021–2026.
