The Department of Geophysics, FMIPA Universitas Hasanuddin (UNHAS), in collaboration with the Department of Geology, Faculty of Engineering UNHAS, successfully organized the International Conference of Geosciences and Geotechnology 2024 (ICOGEST 2024). The event took place at the UNHAS Hotel and Convention Center from November 5-8, 2024. With the theme “Global Collaboration in Earth Sciences for Natural Hazard Mitigation and Near-Surface Exploration,” the conference brought together international experts and academics from renowned universities in Indonesia and abroad. The collaboration with various parties, such as the Geophysics Student Association of UNHAS (HMGF), the Indonesian Geophysics Association (HAGI), the Indonesian Geological Experts Association (IAGI), and the support of Leica Geosystem as the main sponsor, contributed significantly to the event’s success.

The conference featured seven keynote speakers who delivered seminars over three days, including:

  1. Dr. Wahyu Triyoso, M.Si from ITB, presenting “A Seismic Hazard Analysis Framework for The Sunda Arc Offshore Indonesia Using Geodynamic Simulations.”
  2. Prof. Adam Switzer from Nanyang Technological University, Singapore, with the topic “Multi-Proxy Approaches Toward A Long View of Past Coastal Disasters.”
  3. Koya Suto, M.E from Terra Australis Geophysica, Australia, discussing “Use of MASW Surveys in Australia.”
  4. Prof. Josaphat Tetuko S.S from Chiba University, Japan, presenting “The Use of SAR Technology for Disaster Mapping and Management.”
  5. Gilang Widya Wisaksana, S.T., MBA from Leica Geosystem, Indonesia, on “Innovative Geospatial Technology and AI for Near-Surface Exploration and Risk Reduction in Indonesia.”
  6. Prof. Adi Maulana from UNHAS, discussing “Geoscience Data Integration Model for Limestone Exploration: A New Approach in Metal Industry Downstream.”
  7. Prof. Victor Mocanu from the University of Bucharest, Romania, with a presentation on “Ridge Subduction and Mantle Flow. South America Case Study.”

In addition to the seminars, ICOGEST 2024 held Parallel Sessions attended by participants from various backgrounds, including undergraduate, master’s, and doctoral students, as well as professional practitioners. The participants presented their research on four main topics: Solid Earth Science (16 presenters), Interdisciplinary Earth Science and Technology (24 presenters), Atmospheric Science (2 presenters), and Ocean Science (6 presenters). One of the presentations in the Interdisciplinary Earth Science and Technology category was delivered by Siti Fathana Azh Zahra on the topic “Real-Time Environmental Monitoring of A Greenhouse and A Poultry Farm,” highlighting the importance of real-time monitoring systems for the agriculture and livestock sectors.
