BPS South Sulawesi, Hasanuddin University, and Makassar State University Hold Statistics Education Event "Ngulik Desil in This Economy"

Makassar, September 29, 2026

BPS-Statistics of South Sulawesi Province, together with Hasanuddin University and Makassar State University, held a Statistics Education event titled "Ngulik Desil in This Economy" on Tuesday, September 29, 2026. The event was conducted online via Zoom from 08:30 to 12:00 WITA (Central Indonesia Time), open to the public, and free of charge.

The event took the form of a statistical literacy seminar and discussion focused on understanding data and gaining insights into statistics in a socioeconomic context. By using a theme close to people's daily lives, the event served as an educational platform to introduce statistical concepts and how they relate to the various economic information encountered every day.

One of the concepts at the center of this education effort is the decile, which divides ordered data into ten groups of equal proportion. In a socioeconomic context, deciles can help explain the relative position of a group based on the indicator used, such as income or expenditure. Understanding this concept is necessary so that the public can read data groupings correctly and understand the basis on which statistical information is compiled.

The event poster lists Aryanto, S.Si., M.M., Head of BPS-Statistics of South Sulawesi Province; Dr. Sci. Muhammad Zakir, M.Si., Dean of the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences (FMIPA) at Hasanuddin University; and Prof. Suwardi Annas, M.Si., Ph.D., Dean of FMIPA at Makassar State University. The involvement of both a government institution and universities in this event reflects a collaboration to broaden the reach of statistics education to the public.

Muh. Mustakim Hasma, S.ST., M.Si., Junior Expert Statistician at BPS-Statistics of South Sulawesi Province, served as the speaker at the event. Meanwhile, Andi Febriyanti acted as moderator, guiding the seminar and statistical discussion.

The seminar and discussion format provided a space for learning how to read data, understand statistical terms, and connect information to the context in which it is used. This education is expected to help participants understand that numbers must be read together with the definition of the indicator, the data source, and the measurement method so as to avoid misinterpretation.

Holding the event online and free of charge opened opportunities for the public to access statistics learning from various locations. As such, the event can serve as a means of bringing statistical knowledge closer to a wider audience, including students, academics, and members of the public interested in socioeconomic issues.

This event is in line with SDG 4: Quality Education, by providing open access to learning and strengthening data and statistical literacy. The ability to understand statistical information is part of the skills needed to assess information critically and support data-based decision-making. In addition, the cooperation between BPS-Statistics of South Sulawesi Province, Hasanuddin University, and Makassar State University supports SDG 17: Partnerships for the Goals. This collaboration brings together the role of an official statistics provider and higher education institutions in expanding access to knowledge and education for the public.

Through the Statistics Education event "Ngulik Desil in This Economy," statistical literacy is expected to grow further so that the public can understand socioeconomic information more carefully. This event is also part of efforts to strengthen the relationship between data providers, the education sector, and users of statistical information.
