Synergy between the Faculty of Cultural Sciences, Hasanuddin University (UNHAS) and the National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN): Saviors of Nearly Extinct Regional Languages

MAKASSAR – Regional languages in Indonesia are facing a serious threat of extinction amidst the onslaught of modernization. Responding to this cultural crisis, the Department of Regional Literature, Faculty of Cultural Sciences (FIB), Hasanuddin University (UNHAS), is acting swiftly by collaborating with the National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN).
These two important institutions held a strategic meeting on Wednesday, March 5th, in the Regional Literature Department Room, FIB, UNHAS, Makassar. The meeting was attended by lecturers, department heads, and a research team from BRIN.
Concrete Steps to Save Languages
The main focus of this meeting was to develop a detailed collaborative plan for "Documentation & Conservation of Nearly Extinct Languages." Through this collaboration, FIB Unhas and BRIN are committed to digitizing, recording rare vocabulary, and mapping remaining native speakers in various remote regions.
This rescue process will be carried out systematically through collaborative field research. BRIN will provide national-scale research methodology and funding, while the Faculty of Cultural Sciences (FIB) at Hasanuddin University (Unhas) will deploy Bugis-Makassar language experts and students to collect valid linguistic data.
This concrete step is expected to serve as the final bastion of defense in preserving the richness of the Indonesian archipelago's identity and culture, preventing its loss over time.
