Head of Indonesian Literature Department at Hasanuddin University Appointed as Expert on South Sulawesi Indonesian Language Monitoring Team
MAKASSAR — Dr. Muslimat, Head of the Indonesian Literature Department at the Faculty of Cultural Sciences (FIB), Hasanuddin University (Unhas), has been appointed as one of the experts on the South Sulawesi Indonesian Language Use Monitoring Team.
The team was formally inaugurated by South Sulawesi Governor Andi Sudirman Sulaiman along with its other members at the South Sulawesi Governor's Office, Thursday (August 6, 2026). The inauguration was held in conjunction with the signing of a memorandum of understanding with regency and municipal governments across South Sulawesi.
The Indonesian Language Use Monitoring Team was established by the South Sulawesi Provincial Government to strengthen the proper and correct use of the Indonesian language, particularly in public spaces and government institutions.
Head of the Agency for Language Development and Cultivation, Hafidz Muksin, welcomed the initiative by the South Sulawesi Provincial Government. He said the establishment of the team demonstrated the regional government's commitment to preserving Indonesian as one of the country's national symbols.
Hafidz explained that the Indonesian Language Use Monitoring Team has four main responsibilities.
First, to disseminate policies and regulations concerning the use of Indonesian in public spaces and official government documents.
Second, to monitor the use of Indonesian in government institutions, regionally owned enterprises (BUMDs), educational institutions, and government administrative documents.
Third, to provide assistance to regional government agencies (OPDs) and institutions where errors in the use of Indonesian are still found.
Fourth, to conduct regular evaluations of the implementation of Indonesian language use monitoring.
“An evaluation will be conducted at the end of every year. The Governor will certainly give recognition to regencies and municipalities that demonstrate a genuine commitment to using Indonesian properly and correctly,” Hafidz said.
Meanwhile, South Sulawesi Governor Andi Sudirman Sulaiman expressed his appreciation for the support provided by the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education in strengthening the use of Indonesian in South Sulawesi.
He said Indonesian is a national heritage as well as a symbol of unity, as affirmed in the Youth Pledge (Sumpah Pemuda).
“The use of Indonesian requires monitoring to ensure that it does not deviate from the established standards, particularly in formal forums, meetings, and activities that require the use of language in accordance with the applicable rules,” Andi Sudirman said.
According to the official composition of the South Sulawesi Indonesian Language Use Monitoring Team, Dr. Muslimat serves as an expert alongside academics and representatives of the South Sulawesi Provincial Language Office.
The expert team is chaired by the Head of the South Sulawesi Provincial Language Office. In addition to Dr. Muslimat, the other experts include the Head of the Department of Indonesian Language and Literature and Regional Languages at the Faculty of Languages and Literature, Universitas Negeri Makassar; Ramlah Mappau, S.S., M.Hum.; Dr. Sandra Safitri Hanan, S.S., M.A.; Suharyanto, S.S., M.A.; and Dra. Murmahyati, M.Hum.
The monitoring team is divided into four areas: the Socialization Division, Monitoring Division, Assistance Division, and Evaluation Division. Each division involves government officials and personnel with expertise in the use and development of the Indonesian language.
The establishment of the team is expected to strengthen the monitoring and assistance of Indonesian language use across various sectors, ensuring that the language is used consistently and in accordance with established standards in government institutions, educational institutions, regionally owned enterprises, and public spaces throughout South Sulawesi.
