Bachelor’s Program in Geophysics Undergoes ASIIN International Reaccreditation

Makassar, 6 – 7 May 2026 – Bachelor’s Program in Geophysics (BPG), Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences (FMIPA), Hasanuddin University (UNHAS), underwent an international reaccreditation process conducted by ASIIN at Hasanuddin University.

The site visit was conducted by an assessment panel consisting of Timur Schmidt (ASIIN Representative), Prof. Dr. Bülent Tezkan (University of Cologne), Prof. Dr. Stefan Roth (RWTH Aachen University), Prof. Dr. Hilda Assiyatun (Bandung Institute of Technology), Dr. Arie Wahyu Wijayanto (Statistics Indonesia) as the industry representative, and Aifa Maladina Ulya (Yogyakarta State University) as the student representative.

The opening and closing sessions of the site visit were held at Unhas Hotel and Convention and were attended by the Rector of Hasanuddin University, Prof. Jamaluddin Jompa.

On the first day, the assessors conducted document verification meetings with the coordinating team and inspected supporting academic facilities. On the second day, the panel held interviews with students, alumni, employers, and teaching staff to obtain a comprehensive overview of curriculum implementation and the achievement of the program learning outcomes.

As part of the facilities tour, the assessors visited the Hydrometeorology Laboratory and the Solid Earth Geophysics Laboratory. At the Hydrometeorology Laboratory, the Head of Laboratory, Prof. Halmar Halide, presented the progress of undergraduate student research, including work that has resulted in publications in Q1-ranked international journals.

Meanwhile, at the Solid Earth Geophysics Laboratory, Sabrianto Aswad presented the range of geophysical survey instruments available to the program, including Electrical Resistivity Tomography (ERT), Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR), Multichannel Analysis of Surface Waves (MASW), seismic refraction equipment, seismometers, Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) receivers, and magnetometers.

The Chair of the ASIIN Reaccreditation Task Force of BPG, Dr. Eng. Muh. Alimuddin Hamzah, expressed his hope that the site visit would result in the best possible outcome for the Undergraduate Geophysics Program.

“We hope that this evaluation process will further strengthen the international recognition of the quality of Geophysics education at UNHAS, enabling our graduates to compete at the global level,” he said.

Echoing this sentiment, the Head of the BPG, Dr. Erfan Syamsuddin, stated that the ASIIN visit served as an important momentum for continuous improvement, including curriculum updates and course adjustments to ensure continued relevance to advances in science and technology and to the needs of the job market.

According to him, one of the key recommendations from the evaluation was the importance of periodically updating the curriculum structure to maintain alignment with international standards and global challenges in geophysics.

Through this reaccreditation process, the BPG at Hasanuddin University hopes to maintain its ASIIN international accreditation and further strengthen its position as a leading and globally competitive geophysics program.
