Veterinary Paramedic Students Conduct Microanatomy Practicum at the Maros Veterinary Center

Veterinary Paramedic Study Program students carried out a microanatomy/histology field practicum focusing on the principles of dehydration, clearing, and tissue sectioning at the Histopathology Laboratory of the Maros Veterinary Center (BBVet Maros). This activity was part of the Microanatomy course, aimed at equipping students with basic understanding and skills in tissue preparation for microscopic analysis.

During the practicum, students learned the key stages in preparing histological slides, starting from tissue fixation, dehydration using graded alcohol solutions, clearing with xylol, and tissue sectioning techniques using a microtome. Students were also taught how to properly handle and manage tissue samples to avoid damaging the microscopic structures to be observed.

The course lecturer explained that students’ direct involvement in the preparation process is essential as a foundation for understanding animal tissue structures. “Through this activity, students not only understand the theory but also observe and directly practice each stage carried out in a professional laboratory,” the lecturer said.

This practicum activity received full support from BBVet Maros. Practitioner lecturer drh. Wahyuni expressed her appreciation for the students’ enthusiasm for learning. She also hoped that this kind of collaboration could continue in order to improve the capacity of human resources in the veterinary field. “We are pleased to be part of this learning process. Mastery of basic laboratory techniques like this is crucial in the veterinary field,” she stated.

Through this activity, students are expected to gain a strong understanding of the basic principles and practices involved in preparing histological slides, which will serve as important knowledge for further studies as well as professional practice in veterinary diagnostics.
